All I want for Christmas

is a cast and an arm sling...
Kamri now matches her Grandpa Paul who just got shoulder surgery. She ditched the sling after a few minutes of it though. I'm sure you're all wondering what happened and so are we. Here's the story.
Kamri was playing in the grandparents basement with the cousins. It's grand kid paradise down there with all the toys (and parent paradise that the kids are so entertained). We we upstairs when we heard a scream that outlasted the usual "kids fighting over toys" scream and was a little more sad then the "they hit me scream" so we headed down to see what was the matter. Kamri was screaming and for good reason! Poor girl had a huge goose egg between her knuckles and it was bruised all over. We didn't know what happened though so put our detective skills to work and interviewed Cohen the 5-year-old "eyewitness" and he said, "he was playing in the corner with the dump trucks by hisself and just started screaming." (We let him off the hook for not knowing the gender of the victim and went to check out the corner.)
He was right about dump trucks being in that corner but we couldn't figure out how she'd get that big of a bruise from them. There were some little exercise weights on a speaker in the corner also and some of them were on the floor so we decided that she was playing with them and one of them fell on her hand. Bracken, fresh out of his first semester of law school determined that Kamri could sue for Negligence on our part but we hope she decides not to bite the hands that feed her.
We gave her some children's Motrin and she fell asleep on Bracken's shoulder. We waited a few hours and the swelling had gone down but it still looked pretty bad so we headed to the Instacare just to make sure she didn't break anything. The doctor determined there was a fracture but in the bone in her hand below her pinkie. (There is a more precise term for it if someone would like to remind me..5th mandible? ok I made that up) Surprisingly not where the bruising was. The put a little splint on her hand & arm and wrapped it up with an ace bandage. She was screaming the whole time the nurses or doctor got close to her. As soon as the nurses were walking out of the room she went from screaming terror to smiling as she enthusiastically said "bye!"
We made an appointment the next morning with the orthopedist to get a cast. He looked over the x-rays and determined that she could just keep this softcast on and in a week we have to take her to the doctor and get a boxing glove type thing that will give her more movement but still protect her bone. So bottom line, if you have to break a bone it is an okay one to break since it heals easily.
Kamri hasn't slowed down with it. It is sad but funny to watch her try and eat left handed but she's getting pretty good at it. She's still running with all the kids and trying to climb on everything. Hopefully we won't have anymore mishaps this year...I can hope since we only have a week left.
Oh yeah and on the way to the Instacare we clipped the back legs of a deer, it didn't kill the deer or dent our car, so how our lives are going right now we won't even categorize that as a mishap. In fact Bracken and I just started laughing, what else can happen to us?! (.....please something good!)

Grateful for Moms!

My mom, Ruth, came and picked up Hayes & Kamri while I was in the hospital and took care of them. Then drove them to Vegas so I could see them at home and drove me back up to Cedar to take care of me and the kids while Bracken was studying & taking some finals. She packed us all up, did our laundry and kept us fed. Bracken's mom, Denise came down this week to stay with us so we could be at home and see Bracken a little more during this last week of finals. She came down Sunday and flew out last night. We're so glad you came down!! Especially me! She cleaned the house, chased the kids, played with them and let me be the lazy cripple.

I'm so thankful for both of our moms! They are both great examples to me of what Mothers should be. I hope I can grow up to be like both of them. I'm so grateful that they selflessly put their lives' on hold to come down and take care of ours and help us get through my recovery and Bracken's final weeks. We love you both!
By the way, his last final is tomorrow at 1pm and then he'll have no school for five weeks! WAHOO!

Kamri Girl

Bracken's mom, Denise, got Kamri dressed in pants. She took her pants off and put on a skirt. Then she went into my closet and found the red shoes. Top it off with my purse she found in the kitchen and she was ready for a photo shoot.
Some other things about Kamri at 18 months that I always want to remember:
  • Her tight squeeze hugs and random kisses. She'll just run up to you and kiss your leg or arm.
  • How she makes a kissy noise after you say "I love you"
  • She says "Dank you!" After you hand her something, no matter what it is, even if she didn't ask for it.
  • Whenever she hands you something she says "er you go" (Here you go)
  • She holds up her pointer finger (trying to do a thumbs up) and says "Deal!!"
  • If she knows Bracken or I are getting ready to leave she'll find our shoes and follow us around to give us hugs goodbye.
  • If she knows she is leaving she finds her shoes and points to her jacket until you put it on her.
  • She is a good little eater, usually eats her meal and finishes up Hayes'.
  • She goes down easy for naps as long as she has a book and some "wa-wa" (water)
  • She repeats so many words we say and although it doesn't always sound like it, it impresses me that she trys. One of my favorites was Kangaroo. The only part that sounds remotely like it is the ending. "Dagange-ROO"
  • She loves purses and will turn anything closing resembling a bag into one.
  • She is always trying to put on more clothes, including Hayes' underwear over her clothes.
  • She loves shoes, this morning before we left she had changed into three different pairs.
  • She cries for Hayes if he isn't in the room when she wakes up
  • Whatever Hayes does, she tries to do and gets frustrated when she can't.
  • Hayes & Kamri play well together and give each other big hugs
  • After we say prayers at night, Hayes gives Bracken a "huge, ginormous hug" and Kamri is always close behind with a doggy pile.
  • She loves to jump off the endtable on to the couch. Really she likes to jump off most anything to someone which gets her in trouble sometimes when they aren't looking.
  • She has now started to have an opinion about a few things and throws the full body, face-to-the-floor, screaming tantrum if she doesn't get her way.
  • When Hayes says he needs to go potty and runs to the bathroom, she goes running behind him yelling "poop! poop!" and then wants to sit on the toilet, although unfortunately she hasn't figure out how to use it besides clog it with toilet paper.
  • Her hip swinging and major bouncing whenever she hears music is hilarious and so cute.
  • She waves to everyone and always says "bye-bye" to the cashiers at the store.
  • Her smile! She melts me with it.

Thoughts & Feelings

Posted by PicasaMy brother Dixon painted this beautiful picture for me.

How are you? It seems like such a loaded question these days. Before Nov 19 I'd just throw a good or great out there and get onto more "important" parts of the conversation. Now I actually have to pause and think. Pretty good? Good Considering? Ok? Horrible?...and now it really just depends. I think I'm handling things pretty well...but then my child just died, shouldn't I be handling things worse? He is my son after all. I don't want people to have to conversationally tiptoe around me. I like, no love, talking about my kids. Even the one I only got five short days with. The only problem is I do hate crying in front of people, but I'm slowly learning that doesn't matter anymore.

I think I'm doing well. I have days where I can think of my baby Dane and feel happiness and go about the day. There are days I would just like to lay in bed, think of him, and cry. I'm realizing that there are things in life worth crying about...and often.

Right now its the little random things that are hard. Seeing others with their babies or pregnant women hasn't been hard. Going past the maternity department at the store really hurt. Three weeks earlier I would have stopped there just to see if there was anything that would make my growing belly look cute.
Opening the fridge to find my glucose drink for my gestational diabetes test at my next doctors visit was very hard. I hate that test, have complained about it often and now I wonder if I had even made it that much longer, maybe things would have turned out different. But those are the thoughts that get me in trouble, that hurt. What if I'd gotten the surgery doctors are recommending now, even though they weren't before. What if I had stayed by Dane's side and talked to him his whole short life. I remember reading that babies that young recognize their mothers voice, but can that stop bleeding in the brain? Did we make the right choice in letting him go peacefully? I have to stop these guilt ridden thoughts and remember that evening of November 19th. Holding my perfect, beautiful, tiny baby boy. Watching him slowly slip away, knowing even though I am his mother there was nothing I could do for him but hold him; While at the same time I was letting him go. Pure peace. That's what I felt that night and what I must remember in the dark moments of my grief.

It might seem odd that the memory of the moment of my son's death is what helps me most in grieving over losing him but that is exactly what helps. Holding him I felt love, peace, in fact joy. Ultimately I felt the spirit. Yes I was still sad and it was still hard...very hard but I made it through it and that night has changed my life forever.

So how am I now? I miss my baby Dane. I wish I could hold him, feed him, even change those nursing mustard poop diapers. I cry more easily, I have days that are hard, but don't we all. Dane's life and death has made me feel more love that ever before. Love for Dane, love for Hayes & Kamri and for Bracken. I have also never felt so much love from family, friends and even acquaintances. I am amazed at the outpouring our little family has received, every comment online, every card, phone call, text, call, visit or prayer has helped us in our grieving of Dane's death. Little Dane's life and death has taught me of God's love. I have never struggled with or grieved as intensely over anything else in my life but the love I have felt and Christs atonement have lessened my pain considerably. So although for now I don't really have an answer for how I'm doing, I know that slowly through time I'll be able to answer "good" or "Great!" without having to think about it first.

Sometimes you need a good laugh

Not only one but TWO screaming babies
Kamri's death grip
Xander with a scraped up face pretending to be Santa
Hayes sneaking a candy cane and realizing he's caught
Bracken & Mac smiling huge, Brooke and I are going to assume they were trying to be good examples but it just MIGHT have been because they were enjoying torturing their kids.
Santa unsure if he should put his hand on Hayes or not....aren't these normally a kid on the lap kind-of-pictures, not some awkward looking family picture??
The BEST part??..... somehow Brooke & I did not make it into the picture :)

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving!!
I hope you all have a lot of good food and friends or family to share it with!!
I've felt a lot of gratitude lately but way too many emotions going on there so.....here is a short list of some of the things I'm grateful for.
I'm Thankful for:
Bracken's jokes, even the ones that aren't funny. His Strength and his LOVE.
Hayes' giggles and teasing.
Kamri's non stop smiles and dancing.
All who have helped care for my kids while I can't...especially my Mom.
Friends; those who live close & far away, who I talk to often or not often enough. Those I've known my whole life or just met this last week. You have all touched my life for good in some way.
Modern Medicine that has helped bring three beautiful babies into my life, and gave me five beautiful days with the last one.
Prayers and Priesthood Blessings that have gotten me through hard times and blessed me when I needed it most.
The Temple, The blessing of an eternal family has hit home even more this year and a chance to learn more about our Heavenly Father.

I'm Grateful for:
Hot Showers that somehow make you feel so much better even when your insides have been ripped open, your world turned upside-down and your body turned into an unidentifiable mush.
Fabric: that can be turned into so many things to uplift, cheer and comfort.
Chocolate Chip Cookies & Milk: even if they don't turn out perfectly, I still eat them. Lost of them. So I can be grateful for how delicious they are, until I'm 30 (hopefully 40) and they start adding to my hips.
Books: I love reading them to learn and for enjoyment but right now I mostly just love reading them to my kids.
Music: for all the usual reasons and because right now any music Kamri hears she just starts swinging those hips and bouncing!
Pictures: Good ones, bad ones, happy and sad ones. It's always great to be able to look back and remember the good times and be happy you're not there anymore for the bad.

Baby Dane's Funeral

Tuesday November 24 was Dane's Funeral. I will admit I was dreading the day. The eight days before were so emotionally tolling, I wasn't looking forward to another day filled with the reminders of our loss. In hindsight I realize, I also thought that holding my baby in my arms until he passed away would be a horrible experience. Although I wished it did not have to happen, it is the most peaceful and the closest to the spirit I have ever felt. In the same way, I wish I could have my baby in my arms today, instead of having a funeral but the day was filled with peace and love.
We had a short viewing and Bracken's brother Stock gave a wonderful family prayer. Then we went into the chapel for the funeral service. All of the talks were great and the music was beautiful. Although it was hard, I felt comforted through the whole program. The night after the funeral one of my leaders that taught me in church when I was 17 came by with a few poems she had written for us to remember Dane. She wrote one about the Funeral that I thought explained it well.

Farewell…Until the Eternal Tomorrow

Music “…together forever”
prepares our hearts,
our emotions---

Sweet prayer offered by Grandmother Ruth,
Tearful words of Aunt Brooke
Piano medley from Great-Grandmother Janice
sooth, comfort in saying farewell---
good-bye until another day.

Wise, peaceful words of Grandfather Dane
enhanced with song by the joined voices
of grandfather and great uncles.

All preparing for a courageous, loving father
to share his testimony, his counsel,
his grief.

A gentle bishop’s flowing tears
reach out to family and friends.
His testimony of hope, joy and peace
added to the father’s words
To help heal our tender hearts.

And paternal grandmother, Denise
ends in solemn, grateful prayer;
reminding again of our Father’s plan.

We leave this time of farewell,
of this memorial
with joy in our hearts ---

for the eternal tomorrow

by Charlotte Gentry Gwin

The hardest parts of the day for me were watching Bracken carry that tiny little casket in his arms and watching Bracken struggle with his emotions at the beginning of his talk. Since the Saturday night we went into the hospital to now, he has been with me through everything. He has been my rock and helped me get through all the pain and tears I have felt. Now I felt like I could support him in a tiny way. Speaking at Dane's funeral was a way of grieving for him, I'm grateful that he could share his testimony with all our family and friends. One moment that was so sweet for me that I'd like to share was that Hayes was so disappointed that he didn't get to say the closing prayer at the funeral that he was screaming (that wasn't the sweet part) so he wanted to give the prayer at the dedication. I was trying to explain to him why he couldn't and someone suggested that he say a pre-dedicatory prayer. I'm so grateful someone thought of that. Hayes was able to say a little prayer before Bracken dedicated the grave. He prayed thanks that Dane could be buried and thanks for the chairs. The simple prayer from Hayes made me smile.

The day was hard and emotionally draining but I am grateful for so many family members and friends that came to show their support, and so many others who have called, texted or e-mailed their thoughts and love. I have never felt so much love from others. It has helped me immensely through losing Dane. This has been the hardest time in my life, but through it all I have never felt the love of our Savior and our Heavenly Father so fully. I truly believe that we do not go through hard things in life because God is not caring, but because of the exact opposite. We need trials to help us grow, we need trials to help us reach out to one another, but ultimately we need trials to show us exactly how much we really do NEED our Heavenly Father. I have never felt God's hand in my life more fully then I have this past week and a half. I pray that I can live in a way that I'll be able to return to him and be able to see my baby Dane again.

Our sweet baby Dane.

Trying to explain a few more things to Hayes

Saying Good-bye

He is next to his baby cousin, Mila.

I will miss you every day baby Dane, but I'm comforted to know I'll see you again someday.

Our Last Gift

I was able to make a baby blanket on Saturday & Sunday. We showered it with hugs and kisses to wrap baby Dane's body in. Our last chance on this earth to give him our love.

Families Are Forever

Dane P Longhurst was born at 9:22 a.m. on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at the Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. At approximately 6:00 p.m. on November 19, 2009, after only four short days on this earth, Dane peacefully passed away in the arms of his loving mother. This is obviously difficult for us as his parents, but we have felt incredible strength in knowing the following truths:

First, Jesus Christ lives. That truth has been spoken an untold number of times by an untold number of people across the globe and through the centuries. The words alone, while powerful, pale in comparison to the testimony of that truth that burns warmly in our hearts. Jesus Christ came to earth, lived a perfect life, suffered for each of our pains, sorrows, and sins, died on the cross at Calvary, and defeated death through his resurrection. Because he took upon himself life after death, Dane too will live again. The reality of Dane’s future and immortal life through Christ’s power is not a vain hope, a false tradition, nor a naĂ¯ve belief; nor is Jesus Christ merely a legend, folklore, or influential historical figure. Jesus Christ is real and has all power necessary to fulfill God’s eternal plan.

Second, God established a perfect plan long before we came to Earth and the central purpose of that plan is our happiness. To obtain that perfect happiness that our Father wants us to enjoy, two things are required of us, 1) come to this earth and obtain a body, and 2) follow the Savior and fulfill his commandments. Baby Dane fulfilled both requirements and is now entitled to perfect happiness for the eternities. We can also obtain this perfect happiness together with our children if we will repent and become humble like our children. (Moroni 8:11). This promise is made possible by covenants we make in the temple.

Third, God will fulfill temple covenants. The sacred temple is a place where we make covenants with our Heavenly Father to do His will and He in return makes promises to us. One of the sweetest promises we receive in the temple is that families can be sealed together forever through eternal marriage. While worldly institutions have the power to marry “until death do you part,” God has given His power in the temple to marry for eternity. Because we have been sealed by the proper authority in the Holy Temple, we can live with Dane again. Having this promise is one of the many tender mercies that our Heavenly Father showers upon His children.

Fourth, God mercifully showers us with tender mercies to deliver us from our trials because He loves us perfectly. (1 Nephi 1:20). Words cannot express the tender mercies that God bestowed upon us in the few hours we had together with Dane. Those hours were so sweet and so perfect that every moment since has seemed to pull us back to the mortal realm. For a short time we felt higher than the mortal realm, we felt an immense peace, joy, happiness, and love. These feelings are the motivating forces that drive us forward in faith.

Finally, faith is a power that comes from spiritual actions and is felt deeply within our souls. We have made big and small decisions on a simple, yet profound feeling within our hearts, and the power of faith has grown within us. That simple feeling has come in answer to our prayers and the many others offered on our behalf. We are grateful for the prayers, thoughts, and support of so many people and their willingness to help.

More Pictures & an Update on Dane

I hope we'll have many more positive updates to put up in the months to come. It makes me sad thinking that Hayes & Kamri probably won't meet their sibling until he is a few months old...but I guess by then he will be the size of a normal baby so it won't seem that different to them. Anyway. I'm going to go to bed but I promised pictures and an update so here is part of an e-mail that Bracken sent out to our siblings tonight. He explains it alot better than I would have :)
"The doctors did tests today on Dane's brain, heart, and lungs. The brain had some bleeding as expected but the doctor said it was a "grade 1" which is the best it can be if there is bleeding. They are going to do the same tests on his brain in 2-3 days to see how it is progressing, i.e. if the blood is coagulating on its own or if it continues to bleed. Next to the result of absolutely no bleeding, this was the best we could have received. Having seen his head and hearing the doctors always focus on the bruising, I was very worried there would be severe bleeding and the doctors were just not giving their opinion until they new more (why freak out the parent before you know?). Either way, we are grateful for the results and will be praying until the next test (this will probably be the beginning of a long pattern...).
The test on the heart was similar, the next best thing to a perfect answer. The little flap thingy (how's that for scientific?) that normally closes on newborns when they arrive often does not close with premature babies. (Anyone who knows more about what I'm talking about is welcome to elaborate/clarify/or downright correct me. hint hint Kristin). Dane's flapper (not sure of the name) is doing just that: flapping. The doctor said that it was closing and then reopening over and over. They are going to give him 2-3 days to see if it finally decides to close on its own. If it doesn't then they will have to give him some medicine to help it along.
The lungs looked "pretty good." There was nothing worrisome about them but they still have to progress as normal. Also, they gave him a blood transfusion tonight. They told us first thing yesterday to not worry when we hear that because it would inevitably happen. With such small bodies, a little swing in blood count makes a big difference. They didn't seemed too worried about it, so I won't be either."

Thanks again for all the prayers and words of encouragement. Bracken and I have been truely blessed to have little Dane in our lives. We'll keep you all updated.

Our Newest & Earliest Addition

Dane P Longhurst

Born November 15, 2009
9:22am
2 lbs 6oz
14 in

We left the cord to connect the camera to the computer at home. I got this one off of Bracken's iphone but I'll post more tonight once we get the cord.

I'll write more later also but just wanted to at least post one picture and thank everyone for their calls, texts, support and prayers. I have felt those prayers and realize that the calmness I feel about the whole situation is because of all of you who have prayed for us or offered your help.

Long story short I started bleeding Saturday night at 8. went to labor and delivery around 9:30 and was told I was also having contractions that I couldn't feel. Started feeling those contractions around midnight. Had an ultrasound with a specialist at 3am. Given medicine to stop contractions and told I could go home by 5 if they stopped. The medicine only helped for about a half hour. Gave me a second dose and the same thing. After lots of pain, an epiostomy (sp?), and finally an emergency c-section, Dane was born at 9:22am.

I got to see Dane for the first time this morning. (24 hours after he was born) What a little miracle. He is so tiny but I can't believe how perfect his little body is. Right now all his stats are looking good. I'm told it is a rollercoaster ride but we're happy that right now he is doing well and hope we can make it through all the hills and valleys to come.

I didn't get to see him until 24 hours after he was born since I wasn't able to get out of bed. They brought me these footprints and Bracken took some pictures.

His preemie diaper compared to Kamri's.

Halloween

Sully from Monsters IncOur little witch Accident Victim and Boy Scout

We made the trek up to Logan on Friday and went to the annual Longhurst Halloween Party. As always, Denise & Paul did not disappoint! Lots of good food, candy and games. Each grandkid even had their own individual picture treasure hunt and of course there were some pretty sweet costumes!

Halloween night we went trick or treating around our old neighborhood. Talk about bittersweet...so much fun seeing our old neighbors and friends but sad to see the place we miss so much and we won't be moving back to! (well I guess unless the house never sells, but we're not hoping for that!)

The only pictures I took were of Kamri. I was trying to get one of her face but the hat I made was enormous and she wouldn't stand still. I didn't even take a picture of Hayes, how sad is that...he was busy running with his old friends from door to door though. Next year I'll remember to be better about taking pictures and maybe have a better costume too!

Moon Trip

Bracken and Hayes were talking one night about the moon. Hayes really wanted to go to the moon, so Bracken told him the next day they would learn about the moon and take the trip. Boy was Hayes excited! The next day after Bracken was done with school, he got online with Hayes and learned about the moon.

First you need the necessary gear, so of course they fashioned an astronaut suit. Then you must have a rocket ship, and of course the seats are a bit uncomfortable. (Sorry about the blurry photo...the rocket must have been going really fast)
They learned there is no gravity on the moon so you can jump REALLY high...and I'm not sure how Bracken was safe without a moon suit but Hayes didn't seem to mind that he was the only one so fashionable. and somehow Kamri showed up too...I guess we're a little ahead of NASA in our technology.
They collected moon dust to study when they got back to earth. But then Hayes decided the moon was dirty so the dust needed to go in the garbage can. (again, sorry NASA)

All in all it was a successful trip! I'll keep you tuned in for Bracken and Hayes' next adventure. I love that Hayes has such an imagination and Bracken is so good at coming up with stuff to do!

Yard Work

To say Bracken has been studying a lot is an understatement. But two Saturday's ago he took the morning off and did some yard work with the kids while I went to a cub scout training. When I got home I just had to take pictures. They had taken out tons of weeds from the flowerbeds...and with no where to put them they were bagging them up in garbage bags. Kamri would run to the kitchen and get garbage bags while Bracken and Hayes filled them up. Kamri was loving it since her favorite (and one of the most clear words she says) is "TRASH!"

We're glad Bracken is studying hard but it's sure fun whenever he can take a break, even if it is to do yard work!

Halloween Projects

Hayes now calls any craft we do "Our Projects!"

I'm the Cub Scout Den Leader in my ward. For Halloween I had the boys make paper mache pumpkins. It was a little crazy trying to keep Hayes & Kamri from getting paint everywhere while five 9 year olds paper mached and painted so we had a little painting session of our own after they left.
As Hayes says, we love having "our cub scouts" over every week!

While Kamri was asleep I let Hayes pick out something online for us to make together. He found this fun little spider, with a string web that you can unroll and roll over and over again. Of course we couldn't leave Kamri out and had to add a little bit of girlyness with a bow. Which has since been ripped off by Hayes. Now that we know she'll be surrounded by boys I guess she'll have to get used to that. We found the pattern for the spiders at We Wilsons. from a link through thelongthread.

Our last Halloween project we made a little Halloween book. We were stuck inside all weekend because Hayes & Kamri were sick. Bracken had to work on a paper ALL day Saturday (we felt worse for him) and by Sunday I was dying to try and find something to entertain them both. Hayes loved deciding what to put in and Kamri loved paint the Jack-o-lanterns. Bracken joked we spent more time making it then they'll spend time looking at it. Which so far is true but at least they had fun making it and we had a peaceful Sunday evening so I'd call it a success.

Market Skirt

I made my first attempt of sewing an actual article of clothing. I found the tutorial to make a "market skirt" at Made. I had to do a few unpicking sessions and although the tutorial said it only took an hour or two to make it took me like five. I'm slow and still feel like I'm a beginner. It was pretty easy though and soo fun to have her wear it! The nice Las Vegas weather at the end of September must have had me confused that it was spring when I picked out the fabric. Looks like something more for an Easter dress but it was fun to make so I'll definitely be making another one of these for her in the spring.

Oh I love her cute chubby belly!
