Since I didn't put a quote down for Sunday and I'm still not in the mood to blog, here is a paragraph I liked from a book I read a couple weeks ago. It was called "No Riding Bikes in the House without a Helmet" by Melissa Fay Greene. It was an autobiography of her family, her and her husband have four biological kids and adopted five kids from Bulgaria and Ethiopia. The quote is from a chapter that she wrote about sibling rivalries. (pg. 302)
"Each fight, each glitch, each mini-tragedy offered a moment for family introspection, discovery, and repair. Each offered a chance to emerge at a slightly better, closer level. I tried to relay the same news to my unhappy children every time: that a life guided by friendliness, patience, and forgiveness is happier than one warped by old resentments, a sense of victimization, and a desire for revenge; AND that each child is free to choose which mood to share, which memories to dwell upon, what kind of person to be.
From that time, we began to lurch and scrabble ahead as a new entity, not residents of a group home, but a many-armed, multi-legged, lavishly eyed crab-walking creature, like something in a sack race--with abundant hair, umpteen ribs and toes and fingers, a cornucopia of brains and plenty of heart--a family."
I love the advice she gives to her kids and her description of her large family. It was a fun book to read, I caught my self giggling out loud in several parts and their journey through adoption was interesting to me. Anyone else read any good books lately? I'm always up for suggestions!
